25 Years Ago 1992. Mark Cusano’s ST feature asked if a synthetic data architecture for VTS might work better than the raw video approach then used for remote radar data transmission. … The “Marine Climatic Atlas of the World” was released. This compact-disc contained monthly climatological data from 1950 to 1970 that allowed the user to overlay analyses and print grid point data and contoured charts. … Five species of sea turtle—Kemp’s ridley, leatherback, hawksbill, green and loggerhead—were protected by a NOAA National Marine Fisheries Services rule that created stricter requirements for shrimp trawlers to use turtle excluder devices.

An analysis of the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coasts predicted 58,000 sq. km of shoreline at risk of flooding; among them were 25,000 in Louisiana, 6,500 in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and the western Florida panhandle and 8,750 in south Florida. … An undersea data network project, the Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS), was undertaken by MBARI, University of Washington, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and WHOI with $7 million from NSF. … The U.S. Navy and Lockheed Martin had recently commissioned a 26,000-sq. ft. combat system integrations laboratory that replicated actual submarine command and control centers.
