GD Electric Boat to Support
Construction of Two US Navy Subs

General Dynamics Electric Boat has been awarded a $126.5 million contract by the U.S. Navy for long lead time material for the first two Block V Virginia-class submarines, SSN-802 and SSN-803. The contract provides funding for steam and electric plant components, the main propulsion units and ship-service turbine generators, and miscellaneous hull, mechanical and electrical system components to support construction of the two submarines beginning in fiscal year 2019.

Block V will include submarines with the Virginia Payload Module (VPM), which comprises four additional large-diameter payload tubes in a new hull section inserted amidships. VPM will boost strike capacity by more than 230 percent per ship.

Full Rate Production for Lockheed
Electronic Consolidated Automated Support System

The U.S. Navy has approved full rate production for Lockheed Martin’s Electronic Consolidated Automated Support System (eCASS). Lockheed Martin is set to deliver 63 eCASS stations to the U.S. Navy as part of a $166 million contract.

The new eCASS technology has a smaller footprint than the legacy CASS and can handle a larger workload with less equipment to ensure aircraft avionics are mission-ready.

ONR Awards $16 Million
Through 2017 YIP

The U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced awards of $16 million through its 2017 Young Investigator Program (YIP). The awards were made to 33 scientists whose research holds strong promise across several naval-relevant science and technology areas (http://bit.ly/2m1UrjY).

This year’s candidates were selected from more than 360 highly qualified applicants based on past performance, technical merit, potential scientific breakthrough and long-term university commitment. All are college and university faculty who have obtained tenure-track positions within the past five years.

Awardees represent 25 academic institutions nationwide, in disciplines ranging from robotics and lasers to nanomaterials and autonomous navigation. The YIP awards support laboratory equipment, graduate student stipends and scholarships, and other expenses critical to ongoing and planned investigational studies. Typical grants are $510,000 over a three-year period.

Kelvin Hughes SharpEye Systems
For Royal Navy, Pakistan Navy

Kelvin Hughes will supply its SharpEye systems for the Royal Navy’s two latest Batch 2 OPV ships, HMS Tamar and HMS Spey. Each ship will be equipped with a SharpEye I-Band radar for helicopter control and navigation, as well as an E/F-Band SharpEye radar for navigation and collision avoidance. In addition, Kelvin Hughes will be supplying its ARPA widescreen radar display for all of the Batch 2 OPVs. The Batch 2 ships will take on anti-piracy, counterterrorism and anti-smuggling roles currently conducted by Royal Navy frigates and destroyers.

In other company news, Kelvin Hughes will also supply the I-band SharpEye Doppler submarine radar system as part of a midlife upgrade program for the Pakistan Navy’s Agosta 90B-class submarines. Working with Turkish defense contractor STM, the main contractor for the refurbishment program, Kelvin Hughes will supply the SharpEye system to the first submarine in 2018.

Hydro Group Partners with
MacTaggart Scott Australia

Hydro Group plc has partnered with MacTaggart Scott Australia as the firm increases its positioning in the region. The partnership is focused on consolidating Hydro Group’s current work on the Royal Australian Navy Collins-class submarines and extending services to aid the Australian capability for Future Submarine and Future Frigate. Additionally, the company will offer its expertise in specific marine cabling systems.

As part of the company’s international expansion strategy, Chris Westren has been appointed as Hydro Group business development manager. Based in Adelaide, Westren will provide on-the-ground support for Hydro Group’s customers and will identify and develop new business opportunities.

MacTaggart Scott provides solutions from analysis of initial requirements through to commission and life support, operating globally in the naval defense and marine industries.
