SM-6 Missiles Fired
During Sea Testing

The U.S. Navy fired two Standard Missile-6 Dual I guided missiles, developed by Raytheon Missile Systems, from the USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53) during a recent test event, intercepting a medium-range ballistic missile target at sea in its final seconds of flight. The SM-6 is the new Sea-Based Terminal variant of the company’s missile portfolio. This test showcased the flexibility of SM-6 by providing both anti-air warfare and ballistic missile defense from sea.

The SM-6 will be part of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency’s Sea-Based Terminal program to protect against ballistic threats in their terminal phase of flight.

New Facility for Naval,
Commercial Support in Den Helder

System integrator Alewijnse Marine has opened a new service and maintenance facility in Den Helder to support its activities at the Dutch Royal Naval dockyard and Damen Shipyards Den Helder. This new facility will allow Alewijnse Marine to deliver its expertise in electrical systems more efficiently to naval and commercial vessels.

Alewijnse Marine has been working successfully in Den Helder for several years on contracts with both Damen Shipyards Den Helder and the Dutch Royal Navy. The increasing number and complexity of assignments has led to the establishment of a formal service hub.

Satellite AIS Data
Services for Indian Navy

exactEarth Ltd. has signed a three-year contract with Antrix Corp. Ltd., the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organization, to provide Satellite AIS data services to the Indian Navy.

With more than 7,500 km of coastline and significant offshore resources, keeping track of maritime activity is paramount to maintaining India’s security and economic activity. exactEarth’s Satellite AIS technology will help identify, detect and track vessels of interest and secure the country’s maritime borders.

Modernization of Three German
Navy Mine-Hunting Vessels

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK has received an order from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support for the modernization of three mine-hunting vessels of the Frankenthal class (Type 332) for the German Navy. The three boats will receive the Integrated Mine Counter Measure System and the mine disposal vehicle SeaFox of ATLAS ELEKTRONIK. The vessels will also be able to control the Seehund ROV.

MIMO Improves Underwater
Acoustic Communication

RTsys’s MIMO (Multiple Input/Multiple Output) improves the quality, throughput and energy efficiency of transferred data in underwater acoustic communication. Initial testing took place in the harbor of Brest, France, when the system demonstrated a 300 percent improvement of throughput compared to conventional SISO (Single Input/Single Output) technology. Energy consumption can be reduced more than 75 percent when SISO-equivalent throughput is used.

Designed to integrate various communication systems, MIMO has been developed with support of France’s DGA RAPID (Armaments Procurement Agency).

Testing Starts for
Fourth-Generation CUSV

Textron Systems Unmanned Systems began on-water testing for the fourth-generation Common Unmanned Surface Vehicle (CUSV), supporting the U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Influence Sweep System (UISS) program.

Textron Systems completed the design, build and component test phases of the UISS program in November 2016. Following component testing, Textron Systems began the systems level integration and test phase and will move into builders’ trials next, then formal testing to validate system functionality with the U.S. Navy later this year.

Bluefin SandShark AUV Now
Available for Order on Web

General Dynamics Mission Systems’ new Bluefin SandShark AUV can now be ordered on the company’s website at https://gdmissionsystems.com by defense, commercial and scientific customers. Weighing less than 11 lb. before adding a mission payload, the micro-AUV fits in a backpack, can swim up to 5 kt. and dive down to 200 m. The tail section houses the battery and system electronics and is designed to leave most of the vehicle open for the user to customize with sensors and other mission-critical payloads.
