BWT Systems Installed During Operations
To Avoid Drydocking

Freight ferry operator Seatruck installed Optimarin Ballast Systems on five of its vessels while they were undertaking normal operations, including on board the 5,300-dwt Seatruck Progress. Optimarin was formed in 1994 to focus on ballast water treatment systems and was the first to receive full U.S. Coast Guard approval last year.

Deep Ocean Research Uses Finnish Steel
To Withstand High-Pressure Depth

Finnish foundry TEVO LOKOMO Ltd. is working with Chinese scientific research company Rainbowfish Deepsea Equipment & Technology Co. Ltd. to construct a deep-sea research vessel for Marianas Trench exploration. A manned submersible cabin casting will be manufactured at the steel foundry in Tampere, Finland, and made from Vaculok Maraging Steel to withstand extreme pressures at depths of more than 36,000 ft.

IMO Convenes Groups to Plan
CO2 Reductions for Global Shipping

The UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) continued development of a comprehensive CO2 reduction strategy for the international shipping sector with an October meeting of representatives from the International Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO.

Efforts included review of CO2 reduction proposals from members of the shipping industry and IMO member states, as well as determining short-, medium- and long-term goals for reaching zero emissions through development of alternative fuels and propulsion technologies.

IMO member states will finalize a comprehensive CO2 reduction strategy for international shipping at the next meeting of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee in April 2018.

Extended Maritime Telecommunications
Orange Business Services and BlueTide Communications formed a collaboration to deliver maritime communications, including navigation services, cybersecurity protection, voice and video service, access to land-based corporate applications, predictive ship maintenance and remote cargo tracking. The broad scale of Orange’s global satellite network combined with BlueTide’s specialized maritime solutions offers advanced telecommunications availability in remote waters.

Norautron Group Changes its Name

Norautron Group of Norway has changed its name to EMBRON Group AS. It is the parent company of technology firms GuardREC, Elektronix, Norautron and maritime display and computer manufacturer Hatteland Display. EMBRON provides hardware and software solutions, R&D and engineering services and manufacturing to customers in marine, offshore, defense, automotive, security, industrial automation and transportation sectors.

German-Norwegian Partnership
To Shape Submarine Combat Systems

Kongsberg Gruppen ASA and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems established a joint venture for design, manufacture and design of submarines and combat systems. The partnership follows an agreement between the German and Norwegian governments for joint development, procurement, operation and maintenance of submarines.

thyssenkrupp and its partners are developing a detailed concept for a joint contract for new 212 Common Design (CD) submarines that could be delivered in the mid-2020s.

UK Lubricant Giant Exol Targets Maritime Sector
Yorkshire-based maritime diesel engine specialist Maktec Marine signed a worldwide distributor deal with West Midlands-headquartered lubricant company Exol to make its products available to the maritime industry. The deal joins together Maktec’s 20 years of industry experience with Exol’s background of working across sectors as the U.K.’s largest independent lubricants company.

Azurtane Launches Exhaust Gas Sensor Technology
Southhampton-based Azurtane Ltd. is offering exhaust gas sensor technology that can be installed on ships to transmit measurements back to Southampton, where the company converts the data into useable management information for ship operators and the officers on board. This information can pinpoint noncompliance with pollution regulations, compare voyage-by-voyage energy consumption and ascertain efficiency adjustments.

Samson Expands into European Tug Market
The Netherlands-based United Offshore Services, which carries Samson’s high-performance ropes for workboat applications, is offering the Samson Saturn-12 working line in a new sector: for tugboat mainlines and pendants. Samson’s high-modulus polyethylene synthetic ropes are an alternative to steel-wire ropes, supported by chafe products and local service and support.

Space@Sea Project Studies Floating Workspaces
A consortium of 17 European partners is trying to create floating workspaces at sea by developing a standardized, cost-efficient modular island. Four applications for floating ocean spaces are under study in the Space@Sea project: farming, transport and logistics hubs, energy hubs and living. First steps include minimizing motion of the floaters at sea and working with offshore specialists to design a shared mooring solution, remote monitoring and sensing.

Law Firm Warns of ‘Evolving and
Expanding Cyber Threat’

International law firm Ince & Co has advised shipping and transportation companies to prepare for more cyber-attacks in the wake of recent high-profile incidents. A spate of recent attacks has highlighted the evolving threat to shipping companies and other parts of the supply chain.

Shipping company BW Group was hacked in July, causing its computer systems to go offline. In addition, so-called ethical hackers claimed to identify security flaws in the onboard satcom boxes of satellite communications company KVH, while a cybersecurity specialist reported on vulnerabilities in Inmarsat’s shipboard communications platform.

According to Ince & Co, the root cause of this challenge is that increasing digitalization, advances in satellite communications and a drive toward greater technological efficiencies all increase the risks for owners and operators.

OSIL Multi Corer Used in Chinese Research
Global seabed sampling experts Ocean Scientific International Ltd. (OSIL) delivered a 12-station multiple corer to XMU University in China. The hydrostatically damped multi corer is capable of collecting up to 12 samples simultaneously, which include a high-quality sediment sample and the overlying supernatant water. The corer is constructed from stainless steel with detachable core assemblies, available with a 600-mm or 800-mm core tube.

Bureau Veritas to class CMA CGM’s
LNG-Fueled, Ultralarge Containerships

Bureau Veritas will oversee classification of nine new 22,000-TEU containerships under construction for shipping company CMA CGM. The ships, which will be LNG fueled, will have a bunker capacity of approximately 18,000 cubic meters, a significantly higher volume than has been required in the LNG-fueled ship market. Bureau Veritas has investigated the feasibility of the design together with shipbuilding group China State Shipbuilding Corp. and GTT, the containment system designer.

Cable Control Software Used in
Ocean Bottom Seismic Acquisition

Sea trial deployment of ocean-bottom nodes was conducted in the Norwegian North Sea by inApril AS, using their node-based seabed acquisition system, Venator, and the MakaiLay seismic module subsea cable deployment software.

The software can automatically adjust the vessel’s navigation and cable payout rate during the operation, or provide the cable engine operator with values of tension at the touchdown point.

£19 Million Government Investment
In Robotic Technology

The U.K. government announced an investment of more than £19 million into National Oceanography Centre (NOC) platforms and sensor development through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF).

The investment in marine robotics, which is known as the “Oceanids” program, will help NOC engineers develop two autonomous underwater vehicles: a 1,500-m depth-rated autosub long range (ALR1500) and a 2,000-m depth-rated vehicle capable of carrying high-power sensors and venturing under ice (Autosub2000-UI).

Specialized Marine HVAC
Design Unit Formed

Danish naval architectural firm Knud E. Hansen A/S announced the formation of a dedicated business unit–Marine HVAC Design–that will specialize in the design of HVAC systems for the maritime market.

This unit will be independent from equipment makers and cover everything from early project-phase work in cooperation with an operator to 3D modeling for detailed advanced design.
